Circulating Chromebooks – Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Chromebook?

A Chromebook is a laptop that uses the Chrome Operating System, which is like the Google Chrome internet browser on a standard computer. A Chromebook can do anything you would regularly do online, including email, social media, banking, Google Docs, and more. Chromebooks do not have Windows programs and you cannot download or install programs on a Chromebook.

What do I need in order to check out a Chromebook?
A valid PINES library card and a signed user agreement is required acknowledging financial responsibility for returning the Chromebook in the same condition as it was received. A parent or guardian must sign the user agreement for a patron under 18 years of age.
How long can I keep the Chromebook?
A Chromebook can be checked out for 14 days, with 2 14-day renewals. The Chromebook must be brought to the Griffin-Spalding County Library and renewed in-person.
Can I put a Chromebook on hold?
No. Chromebooks are available at the Griffin-Spalding County Library Information Desk on a first-come, first-served basis.
How do I return the Chromebook?
Chromebooks must be returned to the Griffin-Spalding County Library Information Desk during regular library hours. Chromebooks may not be returned in the book drop.
How do I save documents or media on the Chromebook?
You will need a cloud-based platform to save documents or media on a Chromebook. A flash drive may not work.
Do I need a Google account to use a Chromebook?
No, you don’t need an account, but a Google account would allow you to use Google Docs, Sheets, Drive, and other Google apps on the Chromebook.
How do I take care of the Chromebook?
  • Do not have food or drinks near the Chromebook.
  • Keep the Chromebook stored in its case when not in use.
  • Insert the power cord into the Chromebook with care.
  • Do not place your Chromebook on a blanket or other soft surface that will block the airflow to the device.
  • Do not leave your Chromebook in the car–the high temperature may cause it to malfunction.
  • Do not spray cleaners on the Chromebook. Use a soft cloth to gently clean the screen when needed.

Apply for a Library Card

PINES library cards are free for all Georgia residents. You must present a valid photo ID showing current Georgia address. A parent or legal guardian must be present to register a child under 18.  There is no longer a charge to replace a lost or stolen card.  A card is not required to attend programs or visit the library, however, you must have your card or show your card on the PINES app to check out items.

You can also apply for a PINES e-card online! Click here to fill out the form.

An e-card provides immediate access to your library’s online resources, including our digital library and learning resources. If you’d like to upgrade to a full PINES card in order to check out library books and other materials, please bring your e-card account number and your photo ID to any PINES library to complete the registration process. If you have any questions, please call your local library for assistance.
